Protect Your Oil Tank When the Weather Gets Warm

We’re starting to see familiar signs of spring here on the Cape. If you use Bioheat® heating oil in your home, your oil tank is probably the last thing on your mind when the weather starts to warm up. But did you know that it is actually very important to keep fuel in your oil tank during the off-season? Read our blog post to find out why you should top off your oil tank this spring.

How Heat & Humidity Affect Your Oil Tank

If your oil tank is not properly cared for, heat and humidity can cause it serious damage. When it’s warm out, moist air can lead to condensation and buildup inside your oil tank. This can corrode and damage the interior structure of the tank, which requires repair or even total oil tank replacement when damage is severe. Here’s what you can do to avoid condensation and corrosion from damaging your oil tank:

  1. Keep your fuel oil tank at least halfway full
When your heating oil tank is full, there is no space for invasive moisture and condensation to build up. The fuller your fuel oil tank is, the less risk there is for corrosion and rust-related issues caused by heat and humidity. We recommend that our customers keep their oil tanks at least half full to help avoid these issues and extend the life of the fuel oil tank.
  2. Ventilate space around your oil tank
If your oil tank is in your basement, it is a good idea to make sure the area around it is properly ventilated. Basements are the perfect breeding ground for humidity. If your oil tank is in the basement, crack a window or two to allow airflow and avoid trapping extra moist air in the basement.
