Check out some frequently asked questions that consumers have about using this clean, green, home heating fuel in Southeastern Massachusetts.
FAQs about Bioheat Answered for Cape Cod Homeowners
Q: How is Bioheat fuel made?
A: Bioheat fuel is made from a blend of biodiesel and home heating oil. Biodiesel is made domestically from a variety of agricultural or recycled resources. Once treated and purified, biodiesel is mixed with ultra-low sulfur heating oil to create Bioheat fuel. The blend can vary, but the most common blend in Massachusetts is 5% biodiesel.
Q: What renewable resources are used to make biodiesel?
A: Biodiesel can be made from all types of renewable resources, including plant oils (such as soybean oil), animal fats, recycled vegetable oils from restaurants, and even algae oil. All of the fats used to make biodiesel are co-products or by-products of agriculture. For example, soybeans are grown primarily as meal for livestock and human consumption. About 20% of the soy crop is a co-product in the form of oil. By increasing the demand for soybean oil used in biodiesel production, the demand for the crop increases, and the cost of soy used for feed and food is significantly reduced. It’s a win-win for consumers and farmers.
Q: What makes Bioheat® better for the environment and better for consumers?
A: There are several major advantages to using Bioheat to heat your home on Cape Cod, including:
- It’s made domestically, reducing our dependence on foreign oil and adding jobs to the US economy.
- It burns cleaner which allows your heating system to run more efficiently, and in turn reduces your fuel consumption and your energy bills.
- Because it’s made from renewable biodiesel, it’s a sustainable fuel option.
- And, because it’s renewable, it’s also beneficial to the environment.
