5 Tips to Troubleshoot Your A/C

Between backyard cookouts and beach days, we know how nice it is to enjoy your A/C when a summer scorcher hits the Cape. But what happens if your air conditioner stops working? Before you call your local HVAC service specialists, try these industry-approved hacks to get your system up and running.

Top 5 Air Conditioning Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Test system switches

It may seem like a no-brainer, but the first place to look is your cooling system’s switches. Whether someone knocked it by accident or you forgot to turn your unit back on after an unseasonably cool evening, you’ll want to rule out the most obvious solution.

2. Check the thermostat

Next, review your thermostat settings. Check the temperature and knock it down a few degrees. It may be too high, causing your A/C system to overwork and shut down. If you have a ductless mini-split system, make sure the thermostat is also switched to cool.

3. Feel for air flow

If neither set of switches seem to be the problem, give your registers a look. Investigate the output to see if cool air (or any air) is being produced.

4. Inspect and clean filters

Your air conditioner might be overdue for a little TLC. If air flow seems blocked, dust and debris might be to blame. Remove and clean air filters, or if build up is substantial replace them with a new set.

5. Try the circuit breaker

Check your cooling system’s power source. Most homeowners have run into a hiccup where they have to head down to reset the breaker. Make sure to switch the A/C off before you test the breaker, then attempt to turn it back on.
